Why We Created Snowdonia Life

why we created snowdonia life

Every place has its stories.

Some are found in history books, preserving the people and events that shaped the landscape. Others fill guidebooks, walking maps and websites, helping visitors discover the best routes, viewpoints and places to explore.

There is no shortage of information about Eryri.

Nor should there be.

It is one of the most remarkable landscapes in Britain, and countless people have devoted years to documenting its mountains, lakes, history and wildlife with knowledge and enthusiasm.

We have benefited from their work many times ourselves.

So, when we began thinking about creating a journal to accompany Glyn Shepherds Hut, we found ourselves asking a simple question.

What could we possibly add?

The answer, we realised, was very little.

We could have written another guide to the best walks, another list of favourite cafés, or another collection of places to visit on a rainy afternoon.

But excellent versions of those already exist.

Repeating them felt unnecessary.

Instead, we decided to write about something rather different.

Not where to go.

But what it feels like to be here.

To stand outside on a clear winter evening and look up into a sky filled with stars.

To wake after fresh snowfall and discover that the valley has fallen silent.

To watch the changing light move across the slopes of Moel Siabod as the afternoon gives way to evening.

To notice the return of the swallows each spring, the first autumn mist gathering in the valley, or the sound of rain on the roof while the fire burns quietly inside.

To see this landscape again through the eyes of someone arriving for the first time.

Those are the moments that stay with us.

Not because they are dramatic or extraordinary, but because they ask us to pause.

To notice.

To pay attention.

That, we think, is becoming an increasingly rare gift.

Snowdonia Life is our attempt to preserve those moments.

Some articles explore the history of this remarkable corner of Wales. Others introduce places we have come to know and love. Many are simply reflections on the changing seasons, the landscape and the quiet pleasures of living here.

Taken together, they form a journal rather than a guidebook.

A record of life in one small corner of Eryri.

We hope these pages encourage you to linger a little longer over your morning coffee, to take the slower path instead of the quickest one, to look up when darkness falls, or simply to spend a few moments noticing the world around you.

If they do, then Snowdonia Life will have achieved exactly what we hoped it might.

Welcome.
